Fox Television network changed the entire definition of period series with its most popular show, That 70’s Show. This was a series that revolved around the lives of a few teenagers, who lived in the suburbs of Wisconsin, in the fictional town Point Place.
The show was a contemplation of America during the 1970s.
The series was based around many social, political, and economic changes, happening in the 70s; it covered a wide range of issues, including recession of the 70s, feminism, blue collar workers, drug abuse, and the changes that were taking place in Hollywood. There were frequent references to Star Wars and video game pong!
The show was a runaway success with one and all, because it had a powerful plot, which was put across aesthetically. All the issues discussed in the show were blended so beautifully with the characters’ lives that it touched our hearts.
Be it the recession of the 70s that was a result of the Vietnam War and proved expensive for the US, or any other incident.
Many industries were closed due to recession, including the auto parts factory, where one of the characters, Red, worked, creating problems for his survival.
Donna, another character, reflected the general mood of most of the women of the 70s. She had strong feminist traits and hated wearing skirts and make up.
Rather, she insisted on wearing jeans and tops, and it was often said that she used to dress like a trucker. Her ideologies were so, because of the hardships she had seen in life.
We saw the characters talking a lot about the hit movies Star Wars, Rocky, and the game Pong. It was all what a regular teenager would talk about in those days.
They all used to day dream in movie style and often sit in the basement of Eric’s house to smoke marijuana, which was another rising trend with teenagers back in the 70s.
To bring authenticity to the show, a lot of TV actors from the decade appeared on the show! Go for a download of all the seasons of your favorite That 70s Show right now, and live those times again!
